Life…a game of decisions

Well today was a mile-marker day in my small fishing career; a day I wish didn’t happen but I know the events of today were for the best.

I had to make a very hard call with a company I’ve been working with the past few months; today I decided to withdraw from working with them.  I think it’s appropriate to keep their name off this blog so I’ll do that.

Today I learned that no matter how great something looks on the outside, some things are just not meant to be.  A company that I once felt would one day be a big sponsor of mine is now seemingly distant; mostly due to differences of opinion and vision.

My heart has been set on attempting to be a touring bass professional on the Bassmaster Elite Series.  I’m long from that feat but at the same time I feel much closer to that reality than most who desire the same.  Raising money each year, representing sponsors (their brands, products, people, image, etc.), and fishing my heart out is what I’ve been fortunate enough to do the last four seasons (as well as work, be a father and husband, etc.).  I felt this new company would throttle the direction I was heading but it’s clear that that’s not the case.

I spoke with a tenured veteran in our sport this evening, a current Elite Series pro.  He gave me some good advice on how to handle this situation and stressed that I should keep looking upward and onward.

“There are a million people and reasons why you could be side tracked” he said, “but the few that make it learn to successfully navigate the politics of this business and most importantly never lose focus on ‘on the water activities’ (practice, preparation, etc.).  Sponsors are a means to get you there and you are their means to ‘get them there as well’ (exposure).  If you ever get side tracked from that, no matter who the company, it’s probably not going to benefit either party in the long run. ”  Some pretty good advice I'd say...

I’m blessed to have friends for advice like that in tough times.

To my friends at the small company I will not be doing official business with anymore, I sincerely wish them ALL the best and anything I can do to support them in the future I surely will do.

On a brighter note, I got some cool things brewing with Pure Fishing events coming up, Bass Pro Shops (videos and other stuff), and Toyota right now so I am excited about that.  I also got 8 tournaments comp’d for the 2010/2011 team tournament season (in SoCal) by another company so that’s a major blessing and I have a few big sponsorships in the wings for 2011 that might just come through if all the details work out so we’ll have to wait patiently and see what transpires in the next few months.  Oh yeah...and I pick up on Triton TR21 HP tomorrow from my friend's house so I'm blessed to still have a great boat.

Hopefully this helps someone out there when you go through tough times in life, family, business, or fishing.  Thanks for coming along on this journey.

Prepping for the Bassmasters National Championship

I’m getting stuff ready for this tournament coming up on the Red River in Louisiana in late Oct.  I can’t believe I’m only 10 guys away from making the Bassmasters Classic.  Probably shouldn’t think about that though right….

I just got in a little bit of tackle I think I’ll need… I have almost everything I’ll need already.  The nice thing is the Red fishes real simple.  Jigs, Craws, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbatis, Square-bill cranks…8 out of 10 tournaments there are won on these baits so it’s more about finding the best locations vs. finding the best baits.  (man…it’s the opposite here in Socal, but that’s a story for another day).

Here's a punch skirt I made for the Red if I find clearer water...(from the Do-It Molds skirt system)

I’ve scheduled myself to pre-fish Sept 25th – Oct 2nd and then again Oct 9th – Oct 15th.  I’m working out the logistics (practice boat, travel, place to stay, travel partner maybe, etc.) so we’ll see how it all turns out.

I’m practicing w/o any local help which is what I almost always do.  I’m not a big info guy…I know exactly what I want to do there in late Oct so I’m not really interested how other guys will be catching fish.

We’ll see how it turns out.  I hear it’s a real fun experience.  I talked yesterday w/ the guy who represented CA last year at this event (my buddy Nick Woods) and he gave me some good insight as to how the event is run so that was helpful.

I’m excited.  Thanks for reading.

Working on "business stuff"...not really fishing much
Well I haven't had the opportunity to fish any big tournaments since early summer.  A little disappointed in that but sometimes you have to step back in order to step forward right (?).  I'm working on a few cool things with a new marketing company called Team North American.  If we strike a deal (sponsorship), which looks like will happen sometime this year, then I'll be back in business full time.  If not, I'll farm my own deals like I have always done.

Until then, I don't really have any big companies who can cover too many costs.  That all went bye-bye when I had to get rid of my wrapped Triton and starting using the Team North American Ranger z520 (which is the sickest boat I've had so far).

Some companies are still willing to step it up a little so I'm hoping to go to the Won Bass Lake Mead Pro-Am Sept 10th-11th.  The way this all works in my house, I have to raise money to go fishing to keep my wife happy and family afloat.  This stuff is just too expensive and, although I'm not starving, I don't make enough to support touring and a family.

One frustrating thing living in Southern California is there are a few real haters out here who really seem like they don't want me to success before they do.  It comes through in conversations and what I hear they (really one or two people) say about me behind my back.

I guess I just can't get bitter at them or I become like them right (?).  SoCal is full of highly competitive people trying to climb the ladder so to speak and some just get upset (the right word is "jealous") if they see you working hard.

Another frustration is our team boats are supposed to be sold soon and I need mine for Sept and Oct tournaments and pre-fishing trips to Louisiana.  If my boat sells, then I don't think I'll have one to use which will really suck.

On a brighter note, I'm working on a few resumes and boat wrap presentations for a few young touring pros (just to make a little extra money on the side).  I also signed a cool deal with Toyota corporate and Abu Garcia so thats pretty exciting!  Also, I've been fun fishing a ton and having fun at that too so I guess life could be a lot worse right (lol).

Good to know I've got a ton of friends and family members to support me.  Without them sometimes this road doesn't seem worth it.

2010 Bassmaster Western Divisional
Whats up.  If you didn't hear, I won the CA State Title at the B.A.S.S. Western Divisional last month (May).  What does that mean?  Well a lot, but most importantly I qualified for the Bassmaster National Championship now (Oct 2010 at the Red River) where I'll have a one-in-eleven shot at qualifying for the 2011 Bassmasters Classic.  Thats excited to think about!  Also, the National Championship is an ESPN2 Televised event with Mark Zona and crew so I can't wait for that!

So here's how the event broke down for me back in May.

Pre-Fishing for 6 days before the event:
The first 2 days of pre-fish I was on them big time...bagging over 40 fish a day and did it pretty easily to be honest.  Most fish came on a Lucky Craft Real California swimbait (wakebait) and a Lucky Craft BDS3 or RC1.5 crankbait.  Both were fished around heavy shallow cover; in the same areas other guys were throwing frogs, flipping, and spinnerbaiting...I knew the fish hadn't seen lures like these presented this tight to cover and I think that was a big different.  The baits were custom painted by a company in AL called Southern Brothers (contact #:  205-316-0588).  The wakebait was a baby bass color and they crankbaits where a desert bluegill color (pale bluegill color).  These color patterns really shine in the post-spawn when bluegill are spawning and baby bass are roaming the shallows.  I knew this and that was my game plan coming into this event.

That reaction bite faded however each day I was there until it was almost non-existant during the tournament for most guys.  I knew in the pre-fish I'd have to find a few back up patterns.  I discovered flipping the main river current in the afternoon was productive for some decent sized fish too.  I used a 1/4oz Picasso Pro Metal weight, 3/0 Youvella 'Little Flip' hook, and an Outlaw Baits 3.5" Mocha (cinnamon color) tube or a watermelon candy Bass Pro Shops Beaver.

I also discovered a great drop shot bite in 6 to 15 feet of water in the deeper lakes that had isolated wood or grass in them.  I could drop shot around these pieces of cover and (honestly) catch fish at will.  No one was doing this offshore stuff and it was solid as a rock each day I tried it.  I used a 6" Roboworm in Oxblood or Red Crawler on a 1/0 Rebarb hook.

In The Event:
I threw the swimbait most of the mornings on day 1 and day 2.  Missed a few big fish, but never landed a fish on the swimbait.  The crankbait bite was tough too b/c I kept lossing crankbait fish...meaning they weren't eating it real well anymore.  Both days I was forced to drop shotted a limit late (around noon time) and then culled in the afternoon on the main river flipping.

The final day, I only fished a around 2 hours b/c of boat issues (long story) which prevented me for getting on the water until 1130am (with weigh in at 130p).  I used the drop shot to boat 3 fish quickly and then landed my 4th fish by flipping in the current in the afternoon...this last fish came with only 3 mins to go and ironically it was the winning fish for me!
